People blame cleaners and authorities, not themselves. That belief removes responsibility and lets bad behaviour continue, no matter how often toilets are cleaned.

People behave worse when they think no one is watching.

In public toilets, anonymity makes bad toilet habits feel consequence-free.

People think dirty toilets are inevitable.

So we showed that people decide when a toilet turns upside down.
